MAS III - Mullion SOLAS Abandonment Suit

SOLAS-approved neoprene abandonment suit designed to provide at least six hours of thermal protection against cold shock and hypothermia following immersion in cold water.

The MAS III – Mullion Abandonment Suit is a SOLAS-approved neoprene immersion suit designed to protect the wearer against cold shock and hypothermia in emergency situations at sea. Its 5 mm neoprene construction provides at least six hours of thermal protection in cold water, while the integrated hood and neoprene wrist seals help minimize heat loss in demanding conditions.

The suit features a waterproof zipper, SOLAS-approved reflective tape, a lifting becket, and separate five-finger neoprene gloves. A space-saving airtight storage bag allows compact storage on board. Complying with SOLAS and Red Ensign requirements, the MAS III is suitable for commercial shipping, offshore operations, and other maritime safety applications.

SOLAS and MED Approval

The Marine Equipment Directive (MED) defines safety and approval requirements for marine equipment used within the EU. Immersion suits fall within its scope.

The technical basis for approval is derived from the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the LSA Code (Life Saving Appliances), which define performance requirements for life-saving equipment.

SOLAS-approved immersion suits are divided into two thermal performance categories:

  • Six-hour suit

  • One-hour suit

SOLAS-approved lifejackets are divided into two categories based on buoyancy:

  • 150 N

  • 270 N

SOLAS and EN ISO approvals are separate certification systems, although their requirements are partly similar. A survival suit or lifejacket may have both approvals, or only one of them.

SOLAS requirements include high visibility, which is why approved survival suits and lifejackets are typically brightly coloured, such as orange or yellow.

The Red Ensign mark is the British equivalent of the EU MED wheel mark.
