Ursuit Powers Ocean Rowing Worldwide

Jari Saario, who has rowed across the Atlantic twice, trusts Ursuit one hundred percent.

When Jari was planning his very first rowing expedition from Copenhagen to Helsinki, Ursuit was immediately the obvious choice.

"I’ve worked as a rescue diver for nearly 30 years, and Ursuit has always been the gear we use," he says.

Ursuit has been the obvious choice right from the start.

Out on the water, a drysuit is a genuine insurance policy for your life. Your gear simply must be flawless when unexpected situations arise.

"You have to set off with the exact same level of seriousness, whether you're just off the shore of your summer cottage or out on the Atlantic," Jari reminds us.

Drysuits Tailored for Rowing

Based on Jari’s specific feedback and wishes, Ursuit has provided him with drysuits that perform perfectly for rowing. When it comes to functionality, there are numerous factors to consider.

"Expeditions aren’t just about rowing. You’ll have to move around the boat, and occasionally go underwater to clean the hull," Jari explains.

Features added to the standard suits include pockets in just the right places, modified cuffs, and relief zippers for bathroom breaks. Ursuit has handled all these modifications smoothly.

"In principle, they are small details, but they are incredibly important: is the radio pocket on the arm or the chest? Which pocket holds the knife, so it doesn't get in the way while rowing? Or should the suit have integrated gloves? One of my suits had integrated socks, which are excellent for rowing. When you throw a pair of sneakers on over the socks, it turns into a proper sportswear outfit that you can row in for long stretches," Jari says.

It is particularly vital that the drysuit feels comfortable to wear and does not restrict movement.

"I absolutely love Ursuit's drysuits. The suit doesn't pull or pinch anywhere when you move, squat, or raise your arms. The proportions are just right, and it doesn't even feel like you're wearing a drysuit at all," Jari praises.

With tailored drysuits, everything is always in the right place and nothing chafes.

Jari usually brings three different drysuits with him on his rowing expeditions. The same suits can be used anywhere, and the rest of the clothing is layered underneath depending on whether the air temperature is –4 °C or +25 °C.

"The suits block the wind exceptionally well and they also breathe, which makes them very comfortable. I’ve also traveled with a two-piece suit where the jacket and trousers connect with a zipper at the waist. I choose what to wear based a bit on the weather."

The Ocean is His Element

Ever since he was a child, Jari has been used to spending time on the sea late into the autumn, right up until the ice forms. His father used to take him along on fishing trips.

Although the rowing expeditions originally sparked from other people’s ideas, Jari has dove into the projects headfirst.

"I got this feeling like, wow, I could actually do trips like that too. In a way, I’ve been preparing for them since birth: being out on the sea and rowing since I was a toddler, and working two different shift jobs. On top of that, my body is a bit unusual because I don't really feel hunger or thirst," Jari shares.

Rowing expeditions are a matter of pure passion for Jari. He doesn't set out to stroke his ego.

"I’m really no tough guy. The ocean is just my natural environment. I believe humans have always felt the need to test and push their limits. For me, it’s about proving to myself whether I can survive something like that," Jari reflects.

Pushing boundaries and trying new things fascinates people of all ages, from young children to the elderly.

"I’ve received a massive amount of feedback. I’m happy if I can inspire people to chase their own dreams, give them courage, and offer something alternative to follow instead of the usual daily news."

Every rowing expedition has been unforgettable. As a particularly special moment, Jari mentions a flyover by the Canadian Air Force over the North Atlantic. Nature also leaves a profound impact.

"When I encountered the first icebergs, they looked so magnificent. They are dangerous and even surreal because they are incredibly tall and stand out beautifully. And the penguins are funny and playful – they just give you a great feeling."

It’s wonderful that we have expertise like Ursuit’s in Finland. We need to support it.

Rowing expeditions that last for weeks or months are physically grueling. Rowing hours can add up to 14 a day, and getting sleep out on the open sea is difficult. When pushing the absolute limits, you must be able to trust your equipment completely.

"I’ve been so incredibly happy with Ursuit, and I couldn't imagine using anything else. There hasn't been a single reason to even consider switching," Jari concludes.
